Fluoxymesterone (Halotestin) is an anabolic steroid with strong androgenic properties that has been used in the treatment of male hypogonadism, delayed puberty in males, and in the treatment of breast neoplasms in women. It promotes growth and development of male reproductive organs, maintains secondary sex characteristics, increases protein anabolism, and decreases protein catabolism. Replacement therapy in conditions associated with symptoms of deficiency or absence of endogenous testosterone; delayed puberty (men); palliation of androgenresponsive recurrent mammary cancer in women who are more than 1 yr but less than 5 yr postmenopausal (women).
Women taking these are higher risks of developing breast cancer. Other possible side effects are gynecomastia, difficulty in urination due to prostate hyperplasia; hypertension may occur due to water retention, fatigue may occur by its continuous use. Vomiting, nausea, prolong erection, swelling of the extremities; yellowness in the eyes can also occur by its use.
